For all of you SpanglishBaby mamás and papás who are fans of Ozomatli, we are happy to introduce to you Ozomatli’s new OzoKidz album! The Latin fusion band that captivated many of us during the late 90′s and early millenium has created a kids album to entertain the new generation of Ozomatli fans.
So what can we expect from Ozokidz? Educational topics, funky beats and lots of fun! SpanglishBaby had the opportunity to ask Ozomatli a few questions about their new album. Wil- Dog answered our questions, so we’ll let him fill you in.
Check out the interview below.
What inspired you to produce a kids album?
It started three years ago when we were in Chicago backstage at the House of Blues on a Tuesday night. Nobody ways showing up to our show and we couldn’t figure out why, so I went on Facebook and put a post up that read, in effect, “who wants to come to our show tonight? I’ll give you free tickets”. Everybody was responding with answers like “sorry, it’s a school night” or “sorry, I can’t get a babysitter tonight.” So our drummer looked at us and said that we should do a kids album since all of our fans have kids anyways! Then we started looking into it more deeply, and saw there was this whole other market of kids music that we could tap into that would allow families to come to our shows and enjoy them with their children. And that’s basically how it all started.
How was making a kids album different than other albums you’ve made in the past?
Doing kids music is different just in the fact that everything needs to be more concise, more straight to the point. On Ozomatli Presents Ozokidz we decided to kind of make it more information based and subject based, so we kind of picked various subjects that appeals to kids and started writing. I also think doing the five songs for the PBS Kids programming helped us immensely, figuring out how to tap into the kids energy!
What has been your favorite part of this albums process?
Being able to show the songs to our own kids and having them decide which ones were cool and which ones aren’t.
Who were some of your favorite music artists as kids?
Well, to be honest, when I was a kid I was really into the bands like The Clash, Dead Kennedys, and Public Enemy… I never really listened to actual kids music while growing up.
Can we expect more bilingual kids music from you in the future?
Yes, for sure, you can expect more bilingual kids music from us – this is something that we definitely plan to continue.
What message do you hope kids and families take from this album?
We really like to see on our kids interested in playing musical instruments as well as starting their own band, because let’s face it they are the next generation and we need to keep the band culture going as much as possible!

Very cool! I’m a big Ozomatli fan. Used to always see them live at the House of Blues and also at the Glass House. I got to meet them when I worked in the entertainment industry and they were all great guys. Their shows in Downtown L.A. are the best too (at California Plaza). I will definitely get this album.

I own every Ozomatli album and play many of their songs (e.g., Ya Viene El Sol, Suenos En Realidad, Gallina, Are You Ready) for my three preschoolers. I can’t wait to play this album for them! They already like Balloon Fest.
So Cool!!! Thanks for the opportunity to WIN!!
I LOVE Ozo! Our kids would enjoy this, I’m sure, because they already like Ozomatli. (Either that or they just like laughing at Mom dancing when she listens to them!)
Thanks!
