I can clearly remember the day when we took Camila home from the hospital for the first time and how nervous I was about putting that tiny baby in a huge car seat all by herself. At that moment all that could make me be at ease was knowing that my husband and I had really made a big deal about being prepared with the right car seat and making sure it was properly installed.
Did you know that three out of every four child safety seats in the U.S. are not used or installed correctly? That’s a huge number, but as scary as that sounds what is even worse is that almost 50% of children that are fatally injured in a car accident were unrestrained. It’s hard to believe any parent would do that, but the reality is that for many of us that grew up in Latin America we know it’s also a cultural and socioeconomic issue.
We now know that many of these deaths could have been prevented with the simple use of car seats or seat belts, but we need to share this information with all those that need to learn about the importance of car seat safety. That’s why we’re happy to share that Toyota and the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital have launched and online campaign in both English and Spanish to encourage families to practice safer driving for their children as part of their Buckle Up For Life or Abróchate la Vida program.
Toyota will be donating 10,000 car seats to families in need and will also be encouraging education on proper car safety and injury prevention.
To learn more about this initiative and take action for kid’s safety, all you have to do is visit www.Causes.com/Toyota and watch a video, available in English and Spanish, on how to properly install a child safety seat and share the video with your friends and family. We also want to share one of these car seats with three SpanglishBaby readers. Check out the giveaway bellow.

I would tell parents that their kids need to be in a booster until 4’9! When I drop my 4 year old (who is 67lbs and still in a 5pt harness) off at school it seems like he is the only one still in a carseat of some sort.

I learned that at 40 lbs you transition from the 5 point harness to the seatbelt in a booster.

I learned about Car Seat Safety from a mommy forum when I was pregnant with my first five years ago. I would definitely encourage people to research extended rear facing and common mistakes. Read the manual!!

Height and weight requirements are very important! Never underestimate them!!
Children Should Remain In A Booster Seat Until 4’9″ Tall ! Great Video !
I loved the video but I want to give you a piece of advice, on all toddlers and infants car seats the plastic strap holder is supposed to be across their chest. Not having this properly on them can cause severe injuries or even death in a car wreck. Oh also never ever put your kid in their car seat wearing their winter jacket. It’s unsafe because the jacket is way to big and there will be excess room between them and the straps that save their life.
Great carseat. I wish I could win two for my twins!
No jackets or coats on a kiddo in a carseat!
It is VERY important to pay attention to the height & weight recommendations of the car seat!!!
Step 3: Fastening Your Child was my favorite part of the video. I especially liked how she explained that harness straps should be at or above shoulder level.
I learned the car seat should not move more than an inch from side to side once it is properly anchored in.
