Like any little girl her age, my 5-year-old daughter loves to draw. Like any little brother, my 2-year-old son loves to copy her. And so they can sit there for a nice long while surrounded by paper and crayons, markers, pens and pencils. She drawing and making up her own little books and him scribbling.
I’m not a very artistic person, but I do love art. Although my husband doesn’t really draw, he’s been a photographer and videographer for more than 20 years. Our kids have been exposed to all kinds of different art, but I don’t think we really had a lot of book specifically about art and/or artists until now.
My Scholastic Parent Circle pick for February from Club Leo’s catalog is an art and imagination pack which contains six books about topics that range from colors to artists’ lives. Check out the titles:
1) ¡Compórtate, Pablo Picasso!
2) El libro de colores de Coneja Blanca
3) Diego
4) Frida
5) Abecedarios
6) Mi vida en colores
The ones about the artists are a great introduction to some of the masters just for kids. My favorite is the one about Frida Khalo, which my daughter was able to read all by herself. I love how the author tells Frida’s life story in a way even my daughter was able to understand. Not to mention the illustrations that are absolutely gorgeous and go perfectly with this book.
The other thing that I loved about this pack is that there was something in it for both my kids. In other words, my 2-year-old is too little for the books about the artists, but he loved the ones about the colors. On the other hand, a couple of the books were too simple for my 5-year-old, but that means she could read them all but herself.

My son is a major art lover. I feed his curiosity and talent by taking him to the Center of Puppetry Arts and museums.
My husband & I are artists – she views the world through my sturdy digital camera – takes lots of finger photos! We do all sorts of painting, cutting, gluing projects at home and with friends. Our local museum has a great room of sculptures made of different materials the kids are welcome to touch. We also use our imaginations a lot. The couch is a boat, the hardwood floor is the sea, and the pillow her stuffed animals are on, is an island.

I already subscribe to you, and have liked you on FB. I expose my son to art by reading him books and showing him images online and from art books I have around the house. Oh, he also sits on a gigantic art history textbook from my college years to eat his meals…does that count?
My daughter and I go to art classes at our local library. We also have lots of art and crafts supplies at home.

I read aloud to my 13 month old a kid friendly book of Mexican artists that includes some of their work. Now that he’s older we’re starting to use kid friendly paints for finger painting and using washable crayons to draw on paper.
I expose my students to culture through art by hispanic artists.

I do a bunch of kid friendly art projects with my three year old. I’m definitely not an artist, but it’s fun creating together! My husband, however, is an artist, and they do a lot of drawing together.
We just do art, of course. The easel is always up and the paints and markers available. We also love HBO’s Classical Baby Art DVD and we sit and leaf through books with pictures of great art!

We have art supplies accessible anytime the urge strikes, and we have a membership to LACMA and try to go at least once a month. At their school, my children participate in an art program called Meet the Masters that was largely funded by the PTO and our grant writing committee.
I take him to a weekly story/art project hour at a local library and a monthly sculpture tour/story/art project at a local art museum.
We visit local museums and create art every day!

My son is 17 months old, and he comes from a family lineage of artists. I like to expose him to vibrant colors, rythmic and melodic sounds, contrasting textures, natural fragrances and bold flavors. Some of the ways I do this include:
getting him colorful clothing,
showing him books with fun, inspiring illustrations and clever or touching stories,
speaking, reading and singing to him in English, Spanish and Italian,
listening, dancing and singing to music with real instrumentation and lyrics that teach something,
letting him smell my essential oils,
taking him on almost daily walks and encouraging him to pick up natural objects, sniff flowers, watch and listen to the birds, etc.
feeding him yummy, healthy foods spiced with garlic, ginger, basil, cinnamon, anise, cloves, lemon, etc.
letting him observe me in the kitchen preparing my edible artwork.
It is all art because it is all about stimulating every one of his senses.

I let my child explore with washable paint sets. I set down an old large calender or cartridge paper with a paint set and brush. I get all sorts of pictures. From the dogs to family members to places.
We do a range of things – lately I’ve been introducing my 4yo daughter to pastels, watercolor crayons and ebony pencil drawings.
I don’t have children, but I love giving my nieces and nephews art supplies and fantastically illustrated books.
Good for you Wehaf! That’s the right spirit. Before I became a parent I was parent to many children.
