I don’t know of any preschooler who is not totally into Dora the Explorer, do you? And, if you’re raising bilingual children, she’s the perfect character to support you along the way because, let’s face it, preschoolers think she is cool!
My daughter has the lunchbox and the plastic cups and the coloring books and the movies, of course. So, if your niños are anything like mine, they’ll be happy to know there’s a new Dora the Explorer prime time special premiering this weekend on Nickelodeon. “Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom” airs Sunday, November 1, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).
In this episode, Dora continues her magical storybook adventure – which started last fall with “Dora Saves the Snow Princess” – by coming to the rescue when a greedy king steals the crystals that give color to the kingdom. In “Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom,” Dora and Boots have to help their new friend Allie turn her colorless kingdom into a bright wonderland before it’s too late.
Unfortunately, this special episode of the insanely popular Dora the Explorer TV show, does not have a Spanish language track option which, as you probably know by now, we highly recommend you use if you’re raising bilingual kids. However, some Spanish is better than none at all and you should use this viewing opportunity to explore some new vocabulary with your little ones.
“Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom” is currently available in DVD nationwide. You can get your copy via La Tiendita. Or, you can enter to win one below…

I can’t believe her name was Tess. I think it is great to have a sweet girl that solves problems as a role model! Thanks for the giveaway!

I’m glad Nickelodeon came up with this cute character and her friends. My daughter Amanda (3) loves her and really feels proud of being bilingual, just like Dora; and as mom, I take all the help available to raise her bilingual. And back in Chile, my little niece loves the fact that Dora speaks English, just like her American cousin!
Tess the Explorer? Doesn’t have the same ring as Dora… I’m so glad they decided to help the problem that Latins were the most underrepresented minority on TV and put postive influences out there for children. I think Dora is a perfect way to introduce language & culture to young children…let’s open their minds early
Making the character a 7-year-old bilingual Latina was Nickelodeon’s response to the lack of positive Latino roles in the media.
yeah, tess jusy does not have the same ring as Dora!
great giveaway, thanks!
I think the producers of “Tess” definitely made the right choice back then to rename the pre-schooler Dora. I think Latinos definitely appreciate being appreciated as the greatest minority group in the U.S…. and growing! Not only is Dora la exploradora interesting and intriguing, but she’s also fun and challenging to the young audience as they work to solve Dora’s pressing mysteries!
I learned that Dora wasn’t originally conceived for the show. It was a request from execs that the title character be Latina & bilingual.
I think its cool that the creator married the Spanish expert and now have a bilingual kid!

The idea came about for making learning second languages appealing to children!! Oh I LOVE your site, we are raising my son bilingual english/spanish.
i learned her name was once Tess and not Dora. it took some time to get things all togeather after the plan to make Tess a a bilingual Latina girl called Dora! None of them spoke spanish so they hired some bilingual individuals and proceded to make Dora what she is today. A fun show that not only teaches kids spanish, but reaches out to Latina and Latino boys because it was a cartoon that they could see themselves it!
I love dora. my 2 year old girl thinks she is so neat. Dora is here faveorite cartoon.
I think it’s great that all bilingual kids, not just Spanish speaking kids, identify with Dora. I also love that Dora is a great role model for girls in any culture or language.
I was kind of disappointed to find out that Dora didn’t start out as the cute, bilingual girl we all know. This is one time when the marketing dept. clearly got it right in making their tweeks to the original concept.

I liked reading about the origin of Dora. It is interesting that she is raising her child bilingually now.
