¿Qué dice acá? This is my three-year-old’s favorite question lately. She wants to know what the logo on her Papito’s t-shirt, the ingredients on the box of cereal and the headline on my magazine all say. Su tía–my sister– has already taken it upon herself to teach her a few letters. She knows the V (that’s because it’s the first letter of her name), O, M, I, X and J.
I guess it’s time to get a bit more involved in teaching her the alphabet and now I have a great way to do it. Today’s second review ever on SpanglishBabyFinds is another one of the 10 Ingenio toys we’ll be introducing you to during the next two weeks. As you can see in the picture above, it’s basically a combination of blocks and crossword puzzles.
Although Vanessa is way too young for the actual crossword puzzles, we can definitely start using the blocks to begin teaching her the alphabet–as well as the numbers. Each of the 20 blocks has two letters and things that start with those particular letters in both Spanish and English. The blocks are pretty sturdy, the images on them colorful and the letters simple and legible.
The game comes with six bilingual crossword puzzles in the following categories: el transporte, los animales de la granja, las mascotas, las frutas, la casa and el cuerpo all of which you can hopefully use to start teaching your niños how to spell. The blocks can also be used for what they are: to build towers, in this case, word towers. As I said yesterday, one of the best things about Ingenio toys is that they are intended to grow with our children. Ideally, this means we can a get a few years of use out of them.
I think they are just a fun and different way of teaching our kids letters and words through play. In other words, I believe they won’t even know they are actually learning since it really feels more like a game. And, how many times have we suggested that the best way of reinforcing the minority language is by making sure it is FUN, right?
All of Ingenio´s bilingual toys are available via Amazon. Of course, the best way to get them is via La Tiendita.

We like to make an alphabet book. Each page has a large letter to glue on, and then we draw, paint or glue on matching items. For example, we made a sheet with the letter T and then pictures of trains. We make at least one page a week, often more, and keep them in a binder that we “read” through whenever my daughter is interested.

Since my son was an infant, I sang the alphabet song while changing his diapers and other songs. As he got older, I got him an alphabet puzzle that we put together saying the letters over and over again. Later, I bought him a poster with the letters and objects and hung it at his eye level to see everyday. Just recently we were at the airport waiting for a plane and we went on a letter hunt (signs, advertisements, etc). Now, (3) he is trying to make different letters with different objects…on his own. Another great find was a preschool curriculum a friend and I went halfers on. We are excited to use it this fall at our own time and pace. http://www.abchomepreschool.com/
I started when my daugther was two I have wooden letters of her name posted the wall, we went through them at least three times a week. Also, I usually checkout at the library alphabet books that has words that start with every letter, my favorites are Alphabet fiesta by Anne Miranda and Mama Gansa nos enseña el alfabeto by Tony Wolf. I also play with my daughter with an alphabet puzzle that my brother gave her. It is one side in English and the other in Spanish, She really enjoys playing with it. Finally she loves to play the games and watch the videos on sesamestreet.org. Cookie monster and the letter of the day is her favorite. Now she is 3 and a half and she knows most of the letters in both languages.
I tape the letters up on the wall and we have an alphabet race. I call out a letter and who ever can run and grab the correct letter first gets to yell one out untill we are all done.
We use the Rappin the Spanish Alphabet song off the More Boca Beth music CD, and each of my three children know the Spanish alphabet amazingly well!
They read and write in Spanish which helps to reinforce these skills!

wwe have bunch of letters and have the kids bring certain letters to us and then you can start putting them in order mverno@roadrunner.com
At my job we have these large carpet letter and we place them randomly on the floor over the “water” as stepping stones and to cross the water you have to follow the correct path of letters that I will call out. It teaches the alphabet and the kids work on their gross motor skills.
I use the alphabet books from http://www.edhelper.com. They have other Spanish resources that have been very helpful as well.
I help teach the alphabet by associating the letter with things the child is very familiar with. Instead of just the normal A is for apple cards, I make cards like S is for Spiderman. It makes the child more interested in learning when he sees pictures of things he likes!

We use the games scrabble jr and boggle jr with our 3 year old son who already knows the letters but this helps him learn how they form words. To teach him his letters we used a leappad fridge phonics magnetic toy. He played with it in the kitchen whenever I would make dinner. It taught him all the letters pretty quickly.
I made pages in a notebook that had the letters on them. Each day, my son picks a page and cuts out pictures that correspond to that letter and pastes them on the page–such as apples for a and so forth. He’s also learning how to spell from doing this! Thank you for the contest!
guess I am old school, we sing the song and read the books!
