In 2007 Target, in partnership with The Heart of America Foundation, launched the Target School Library Makeover. The goal was, and still is, to help more children read proficiently by the end of third grade. So how exactly does Target help children accomplish this? The program helps revive school libraries across the country that are in need by providing them with a new surplus of books and technology that will surely get kids excited about reading.
This year’s program will include three awesome components. First, library makeovers that consist of transforming 32 school libraries with remodeled spaces that will feature 2,000 new books, furniture, carpets and shelves, and a technology upgrade that includes new iPads! As if that weren’t enough, each child will also receive seven new books to take home! The chosen schools will also have the option of receiving Target Meals for Minds school-based food pantry in addition to the library makeover.
The second component of the Target School Library Makeover program is $1.5 million in reading grants to over 100 schools that have already received library makeovers in order to increase reading proficiency. And finally, Target will work with school districts in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. to develop a literacy pilot. The goal being that by the end of 2012, Target will have transformed libraries at 150 elementary schools across the country that are in need.
We all know how important literacy is in our child’s life. Reading not only opens up our child’s imagination, but also provides them with the tools to explore and embrace the world around them. Many of us even create little reading nooks at home with our favorite bilingual books, or set aside a special time of day just for reading with our niños en español. So, of course we are also hosting an awesome giveaway for SpanglishBaby readers to get their own and special bilingual reading nook en tu casa.

A nice library space for kids includes a soft place to sit–maybe a beanbag or large pillow–and a rug to lie on as well as to define the space. It might also include a toy character from a favorite story.

My ideal home library would be located in an alcove room off our main living room. There would be two windows with plantation-style shutters to provide for natural reading light during the day. For reading in the evening , a couple of floor lamps would provide necessary lighting. The walls would be painted a homey creamy vanilla. On the walls are photos of our family reading their favorite books as well as illustrations from favorite books. On the floor we would have a brightly colored rug featuring favorite book characters. Placed on the floor would be baskets of cloth and board books for baby and toddler readers. A stack of several comfy floor pillows would encourage the kids to stretch out and read on the floor. There would be several child size chairs including a child size-rocking chair. There’s also a grown-up size rocking chair with cushions for comfy reading together. In addition there is a comfortable love seat with cushions so that a grown up and several kids can cuddle up and read. Close at hand is a large wooden bookshelf that is securely fastened to the wall. The wide shelves have lots of books of all sorts: wordless books, alphabet books, picture books, nursery rhymes, poetry, biographies, cookbooks, fiction and non-fiction books in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language. The books displayed on the shelves are only a small part of the family’s book collection. The selection of books displayed is frequently rotated and added to based on the ages of the children, their favorite authors, their special interests, and upcoming events and holidays. If books become worn, they are repaired or replaced, so love and care of books is always demonstrated, explained, and practiced. There is also a CD player so the family can enjoy listening to books on tape together. Although the family reads all over the house, this is a very special spot dedicated only to reading and books.

My ideal at home library space would include wall to wall book case, lots of spots to read books on the floor. A ton of bilingual books from different languages. Also the option to have a kindle/ipad for digital books.
Our loft has a great view of our community lake. My daughter and I like to stretch out on the sofa and read and every once in a while we look out the window and enjoy nature. What would make the area ideal is to have a bookcase to place all her books in. They currently are stacked on a side table and because she is a two-year-old, the book that she wants to read always seems to be on the bottom of the stack. All the books fall on the floor and then a battle ensures for her to pick them up. A bookcase would be nice!
A comfy place for several people to sit, several very soft blankets or quilts ranging from thin to thick, good lighting, and books…lots and lots of books from children’s to fiction to non -fiction to biographies. Both of my kids love books. My 12 year..he old is always reading (he likes books that are in series) …my 4 year old loves to be read to..and gets excited when she recognizes a word. Oh and yes, bookmarks…hey, that gives me a great idea for a craft project with the 4 year old today.
Thank you for the chance.

I would like the ideal library to include a comfy spot for getting so carried away with books, puzzles, music and crafting supplies that little exhausted (nap-defiant) souls could busy themselves to sleep and not need to be moved. I remember how much I loved lounging with books as a child and I’d love that for my little ones as well.
