My baby is finally starting to use his sign language with me!  It is so exciting to have him let me know his wants and needs through signs.  I had used sign language with my first son, and it was a wonderful way to communicate before he could speak.  We stuck to the basics—milk, more, eat, all done, etc.  Just knowing these simple signs went a long way in helping us with communication difficulties.  In our family, where I speak to our children in Spanish and my husband speaks to them in German, sign language has been a bridge between the different languages.

I was thrilled to discover that Scholastic was releasing a DVD series of some of my favorite children’s stories with sign language.  The two most recent releases are Goodnight Moon… and More Great Bedtime Stories and A Pocket for Corduroy…And More Stories about Friendship.  The stories are presented with both vocal and American Sign Language narration.  They are fun to watch and you can learn while viewing the stories.  These DVDs are of interest to families of all hearing abilities, and are helping me to reinforce the ASL signs that I am using with my children.  The videos also have interactive quizzes and vocabulary reviews to enhance the learning experience.  The vocabulary review really helps the children learn the signs and watching the story told using ASL shows the language used in context.  My two-year-old son loved watching the stories, and enjoyed trying out some of the recently learned signs with his baby brother.  My baby watched interested in both the story and the sign language.

Learning sign language can be a great way to expose your child to another language, and these videos support that goal.  Research has demonstrated that continued use of ASL can lead to expanded vocabulary and higher IQ scores.  I liked that the DVDs promoted reading and language learning.  We have the Spanish version of Goodnight Moon, and it is one of our favorite books.  Watching the video, we were able to hear the story in English and see the sign language.  What a great way to enhance the learning of multiple languages!  My sons enjoyed watching this familiar story and seeing the artwork that accompanied the sign language.  I appreciated the quizzes and vocabulary reviews that made this an interactive learning experience.

These DVDs are of interest to both parents and children.  They take classic stories, but present them visually with beautiful music and art and the story told in sign language.  I have never seen another video like the ones in this series.  They are unique and really support my efforts at teaching sign language to my children.
