Who doesn’t like been read to? My daughter, Vanessa, absolutely loves it when I—or anyone else in our family—sits down to read to her a book of her choice from her growing library. While I wished I had all the time in the world to do just that as often as she’d like to, life pulls me in way too many directions. That’s why I was absolutely thrilled when I found Lorito Books.
The premise is simple: you choose a book from their growing selection and with it you get a CD with the narration both in English and Spanish in separate tracks—if the book is bilingual, or in Spanish only. Several books, including La Parranda de Mimí and The Bossy Gallito, are actually read by their authors which is definitely a treat because who knows the rhythm of their prose better than the person who wrote it?
When I found out that Pam Fochtman, the founder of Lorito Books, lived in my hometown, I asked if we could meet. I was curious about her idea and the reason behind her awesome company. Plus, as I’ve said many times in the past, anyone who supports and furthers our ideal of raising bilingual children, is an instant friend of mine! Pam worked many years in the sales deparment of the audiobook industry, particularly the one serving libraries. Her idea for Lorito Books came from the realization that there were a lot of requests for audiobooks in Spanish.
Pam gave me a couple of books with their corresponding CDs to try out and I couldn’t wait to get home and see Vanessa’s reaction. The book pictured above, Con mis oídos, belongs to a series about the senses written in Spanish by Argentine author Mariana Pellegrino. They’re read by Kristine Klanderud, a bilingual lawyer and artist from Guatemala whose voice was made for audio recording! Although my daughter can’t read yet, she’s able to follow along perfectly fine by listening to the track that includes the page turn signals.
One of the things that I like the most about Lorito Books is that they only choose “culturally relevant, values based titles that translate well to the audio format.” Not to mention that they’re visually engaging!
