Songs in Spanish and English, playful puppets, colorful toys, and dancing children are all in the educational and entertaining Cantarima videos. These videos are not only fun, but also they teach a variety of different concepts as well. The use of Spanish throughout the videos is a great way to further your child’s language development.
There are two different videos produced by Cantarima-Cantos y Rimas (nursery songs and rhymes) and Números y Figuras (numbers and shapes). The Nursery Songs and Rhymes DVD makes use of traditional nursery rhymes and songs. This video is bilingual and has songs in both Spanish and English. This video also presents basic concepts such as the alphabet, numbers and even simple sentences in both languages. The use of music, repetition and visual images reinforces learning. My son especially loved the puppets and seeing the other children in the video singing and dancing.
The Numbers and Shapes DVD achieves its educational objective through the use of traditional music, toys, puppets, games, and musical instruments. By watching the video, children learn or reinforce their knowledge of geometric figures and the numbers from 1 to 10. This is my son’s favorite video since we are currently studying shapes and numbers. I love that the video supports what I am teaching him.
My son usually has very little interest in videos or television, but the music and visual imagery captivated him. Most of the songs are traditional songs, many of which he knew, and I found him singing along with the music. Both videos run for approximately 26 minutes. My son enjoyed watching them on his own, but he enjoyed them even more when we watched them together as is recommended by the producers of the video. We would sing together and talk about the shapes and practice counting. We were able to turn watching the video together into a fun and interactive experience.
These videos are good for children just learning Spanish or for native speakers as well. Whether your children watch these videos alone or with you, they are guaranteed to enjoy them. They will not only have fun, but they will be learning too.

I was unaware of a new Spanish language TV station called, “Semillitas”. I also like what I read with respect to “Numeros y Figuras”. Both of my boys are enrolled in Toddler Spanish classes through the Bilingual Fun Company and I can attest for how well both are learning through the combination of music, rhythm and lyrics. I am eager to check out Cantarimas product line!
Cantarimas is something that I was exactly looking for this week. Spanish is my second language, so I know all the English nursery rhymes, but was only introduced to a few Spanish nursery rhymes in second language classes. As the Spanish-speaking parent it is so difficult to remain true to only speaking Spanish when we want to sing. Of course I make up a few melodies to go with what we are doing, but learning some traditional rhymes with my children would be a joy. I was excited to learn about “Semillitas” and the availability of Cantarimas at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

I enjoyed reading their tips on teaching a second language at home, and learned that it’s normal for kids to switch from language to language, in our case spanglish ( :

Our Spanish videos are meant to be a more intensive language-learning experience, either for children who are native-speakers or new learners. As always, we use traditional children’s songs (in Spanish only), along with animated puppets, colorful toys, and on-screen playmates to bring words and themes to life.

I learned that because they feature traditional, well-known children’s songs, the products provide a musical introduction to language as well as culture and heritage.
