Established in 1993 with the intent to bring world music to the people, Putumayo World Music has become well known for their quality music compilations. Each CD’s beautiful cover art by British illustrator Nicola Heindl, is also not to be overlooked.
Putumayo calls their target audience “Cultural Creatives,” – “a sociological term for [the] 50 million North Americans and millions more around the world with an interest in culture, travel and the arts.” … (I think the SpanglishBaby audience definitely falls into that category!)
Last year we reviewed the Putumayo Latin Party CD and today I’ll introduce you to two more of their compilations – but I encourage you to check out their other selections.
Putumayo’s Rumba, Mambo, Cha Cha Chá CD features Latin dance music originating in Cuba. Cuban music is a unique blend of both African and European influences and is popular all over the world. The linear notes which accompany the CD are in English and Spanish. It’s really impossible to be in anything but a good mood while listening to the tropical rhythms. (Listen to the songs HERE to see what I mean!)
While you Cha Cha Chá off into the night, here’s a CD from Putumayo to put the niños to sleep.
(Listen HERE.)

I follow Spanglish Baby on FB and my 6 yr old daughter and I love the mambo!!
My 16-month-old loves to listen and dance to anything with clear repetitive beats. For example, surprisingly electronic or drums in Cuban, Salsa, and brazilian beats. I’m still exploring and want to expose her to all sorts of music. These albums would be a great addition to our music library.
I am in LOVE with Salsa and I really, really, really want these CD’s as I love Latin Music!!

I don’t think I could pick one favorite. I’m curious to see the other responses. I love to dance to salsa and cumbia. I am also completely mesmerized watching Tango and flamenco. My kids and I love dancing especially to Latin ritmo.

I can tell you want I DON’T like! bachata and cumbia. Drives me insane. And I don’t like banda or corridos very much either. But I do love trova and flamenco and Afro-Cuban rhythms. The quebradita is also entertaining at parties.
