We’ve dedicated this whole week to a wondrous Mexican celebration called Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). We hope you’ve enjoyed it and that you’ll find ways to incorporate such a special celebration into your own traditions. To wrap up this week-long series, we’d like to share with you a couple of original Día de Muertos’ finds and give you a chance to win one of them.
Rosita y Conchita – A rhyming storybook in English and Spanish
Talking to children about death is never easy. They always have so many questions about a subject matter we don’t fully comprehend ourselves. As Susan, one of our contributors, said “a lot can be learned by looking at other cultures’ beliefs and traditions surrounding death.” Rosita y Conchita is the perfect book to do just that so that you can explain death to your children in a way that’s not scary or impossible to grasp.
First of all, this bilingual children’s book has some of the most artistic illustrations I’ve seen in a long time. Color is used with a specific purpose – to illustrate the world of the living and the world of the dead – and it works perfectly. The characters are adorable cartoons children find friendly and fun. Secondly, the storyline is original in that it’s about a girl who’s decorating an altar with all kinds of ofrendas for her twin sister, not an older relative who’s passed away. The twin sister has all kinds of troubles trying to get back, but eventually love conquers all. It’s a beautifully told story which my daughter was enthralled with all throughout. The book even comes with some treats at the end, including how to make your own calaveritas (sugar skulls).
Personalized Día de los Muertos T-shirt
Surropa has a unique Día de los Muertos t-shirt with the image of a calavera by famed designers the Beast Brothers. The best part? Just like you would write the name of a loved one you’d like to honor on a calavera, this tee can be customized for you with the name of your choosing. There are three color schemes to choose from and a variety of woman and men sizes. The name you choose can be up to 11 letters.
This is definitely an original option for you to remember or celebrate the life of someone special who’s passed away. You can win one below, or run over to Surropa.com to grab any of their art, clothing or accesories of your choice using special discount code: SPANGLISHBABY.

I’ve love to win “Rosita and Conchita,” I do bilingual storytelling at our local library and this would be an awesome addition, also it would make a great read for my own kiddos. Thanks for the opportunity!
I am an e-mail subscriber. Thanks!
I would be able to use BOTH of these in my classroom. I teach Spanish, and each year we spend about a week learning about and celebrating Day of the Dead. The biggest struggle for my students is how to grasp that death is not a scary thing, but something to celebrate or even make fun of! I would also LOVE to wear the shirt on our craft day–what a perfect way to show off my holiday spirit!

I blogged this giveaway. Our school is learning about Day of the Dead for the first time this week! Here’s my blog entry:

I just had to have an impromptu conversation with my daughter yesterday about death. None of my answers seemed to be good enough and in fact made her ask even more questions. So, this book? Would be very welcome in our house right now! The cover looks beautiful, so I can only imagine the inside.

My daughters would love to have this book. I hope I win.
I teach bilingual students and we are studying various celebrations. Some of them are familiar with Dia de los Muertos, but for others it’s foreign. The book would be a great way to share with my students more about cultural differences and discuss their heritage.
