Although we love to say that we celebrate Hispanic Heritage every single day here on SpanglishBaby, we have to admit to loving Hispanic Heritage Month because the celebration just goes on overdrive. Case in point is Disney ¡Ajá! This oh-so-exciting and oh-so-awaited online destination by Disney gathers in one place a slew of online games, printables and full episodes of  many of our kid’s favorite shows in one place and all ¡en español!

Are you as excited as we are? Disney ¡Ajá! is definitely bookmarked on my browser now and I know it will become one of my girl’s favorite online destinations (along with her current obsession of Club Penguin in Spanish!).

I can bet you anything she’ll probably squeal when she sees the Teen Beach Movie game “Motociclistas Contra Surfistas.” Her favorite Teen Beach Movie song plays as soon as you click the game. ¡Le va fascinar!

There’s also games under “Juegos y Actividades” featuring Princesita Sofía, Planes, Jake, Jessie, La Suerte de Charlie, OZ, Phineas y Ferb, Doc McStuffins, Stan, El Perro Bloguero , Crash y Bernstein y Gravity Falls.

Oh, and how about karaoke in Spanish to sing-a-along to some Disney classics like Peter Pan, Cinderella, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Tangled? I’m sure I’ll be getting into this one with her too!

Of course, Mickey Mouse y sus amigos had to be part of the fun too. There’s a set of cute printable coloring sheets to choose from.

The first real, real obsession with a princess that my girl Camila had was with Sofia the First. As soon as the movie came out on Disney Junior last year all she wanted was to watch it on repeat. Soon enough, she had learned the words to the main song in English (the soundtrack was only available in English) and had put together a choreography y toda la cosa. I still love watching this video we captured of her performing for us in a full Sofia gown.

As soon as the Doc McStuffins video arrived and I opened the box I was super excited to see that the main character, Doc, was a woman of color. My daughter, who is almost 3, has been noticing the color of people’s skin and I have been starting to wonder if she’s timid around darker skinned people or if I am misinterpreting her reactions. I have also noticed that most of the people she interacts with are white so it wouldn’t be too surprising if I were right, unfortunately.

We are a Latino household and I consider my skin to be brown. That being said, it has been challenging to find books that reflect images of minorities in a positive and non-stereotypical light. In fact, all of my nena’s dolls are white which makes me concerned about the messages she is internalizing. I am not the only one that feels this way. As I was reviewing this new Disney product I ran across mom bloggers, such as Cincomom, who were happy to see an African-American in the role of the doctor.

The character, Doc, basically gets help from her stuffed animals to fix toys. My daughter knows what a doctor is since she has been going to many of my prenatal visits and seemed excited to see one working with little toys and animals. Since we are expecting a baby this summer the video has also provided us with another frame of reference to continue talking to her about what doctors do; such as deliver babies. It’s been fun watching her reactions to how, la doctora (since we only watch the video in Spanish), interacts and heals her toys with the help of her friends.

For weeks now my girl has been asking me every day if today is the day when Sofia the First starts airing on Disney Junior. I kept saying “Todavía no,” but reminding her that she would get to watch the movie, Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess, in an actual theater at the Walt Disney Studios lot. I’m sure she really has no grasp at just how special and exciting that is, but she felt it once last Saturday came around and the three of us (including papá) headed out to the Disney lot in Burbank, CA to find our own spot in the Lavender Carpet and get our chance to interview celebrities as they walked by.

Of course, being it that I had the cutest 5-year-old little assistant at the premiere, we were lucky to get interviews with Sara Ramirez (voice of Queen Miranda), Lou Diamond Phillips, Darcy Rose Byrnes (voice of Princess Amber) and many more, including a very special fan-moment for my girl!

Hispanic Heritage Month is all abuzz with celebrations happening all over the country to recognize the richness of the Latino cultural heritage in the United States. From Sep. 15 through October 15 we have so many opportunities to immerse our children in the beauty of one of their cultures and teach others about it as well.

Disney Junior is joining the celebration with four beautiful :30 second spots featuring Latino children and parents talking about elements of their heritage that they embrace.

The four spots feature:

• A game of lotería
• A piñata party
• Children singing De Colores
• A boy learning to make a banana helado from Colombia

And, guess what? My girl, Camila and I, were invited to be featured in one of the spots! Since we love to play lotería, and it’s a perfect game to practice words in Spanish, that’s the spot we’re on!

My girl and I had so much fun shooting these together and now we even have a beautiful keepsake to treasure as much as we do our game of lotería. Camila’s reaction when I showed her the spot was hilarious because she saw the entire thing quietly and with a critical look on her face. When the spot was over, I asked her in Spanish, “Did you love it?” She said, “I did, but that’s not how it is, they got it wrong because I told everyone that after you win, you get a sticker.” Yes, she did say that many times to camera, so I had to give her a quick lesson in how TV is made. Not sure she totally got it, but at least now she’s not critical when she watches the spot! Now, she can’t wait for all her amigos y amigas to see it as well!

You might already know Doc McStuffins as the show your niños are crazy about. It’s no wonder Doc McStuffins is the number one series for kids between the ages of two and five. Now Doc McStuffins will finally be available on DVD and digital copy! Doc McStuffins: Friendship Is The Best Medicine will include five episodes which feature two stories each. The DVD includes Spanish and French audio and subtitles as well.

In case you aren’t familiar with the series, Doc McStuffins is an animated series that follows a six year-old girl who plays doctor for her damaged stuffed animals and toys. Her friends Stuffy, Lambie, Hallie, Squeakers and Chilly help Doc run the clinic on a daily basis. Doc and her friends are always there to help a damaged toy in need while teaching kids the importance of caring for themselves and others.
