EDITOR´S NOTE: We apologize, but due to flaws in the voting system we are utilizing we have decided to close the contest until further notice. There will still be a winner and all seven schools will receive an award for their time and participation.
It is very important for us that you all know that our hearts, best intentions and hours of dedicated work are in this contest. It is of utmost importance for us that it is perceived as fair, so we will come back with another way to choose a winning school.
We are aware of the inconvenience this has caused and will find a way to make up for it.

We’re so happy to present you with the work submitted by the schools which will be competing for the $500 worth of books in Spanish or bilingual we’re giving away as part of our very first Bilingual School Library Contest.
Ana and I loved looking at the colorful and creative posters the children created and reading about why each school thinks they should win the contest. Now it’s up to all of you to decide. The rule is for you to just vote for whichever poster and paagraph you like best. The voting period will be open from today, May 18, 2011 to Sunday, May 22, 2011 midnight EST Monday, May 23rd, 2011.
Thanks to all the schools who participated and good luck to all!

¡No navegues sin un libro!
We had a blast celebrating Día de los niños/Día de los libros. We read our favorite books, invited parents to read in English and Spanish and created our poster for this contest. The second graders told me they really want to win this contest because it would help them explore the world, know more about famous people and help them to get smarter and be more prepared for 3rd grade. As I talked with the second and third grade teams, a common need is for more Spanish books in the classroom. It would mean the WORLD to us (we would feel so proud to share these books with our students) to have Spanish and bilingual books in our classrooms for the students to share.
School: Aldama Elementary

Grade: 2nd
Teacher: Señora Vega and Ms. Tomback
¡Los Niños Necesitan Libros! We Love Books!
Our Dual Language classrooms need books. We would love to win this contest because books have a lot of information and we can learn lots of things from them. If we won new books that we haven’t read yet, we would choose to read them, instead of watching TV. We would become better readers because we would have more books to read. We would be very happy to have new books at our school.
School: San Rafael Elementary,
Pasadena, CA (Dual Language Immersion Program Spanish/English)
Grade: 2nd
Teacher: Priscila Léon-Didion
We are students in a new dual language immersion program (Spanish-English) and we would like to have books in Spanish in our library. We are excited to learn to speak Spanish but need books in Spanish to learn to read better. We are proud that in two years we have learned lots of Spanish. We need exciting and diverse books in Spanish to learn more. ¡Leer es Poder!

Grade: 3rd

Why Our School Should Win This Contest
There are 480 children from different cultures who are in our school which has a Spanish /English Dual Immersion Program. To be good readers in English and Spanish we need to read books in both languages. When we do so we are also able to write, speak, and think in both languages. This makes us smarter. Although we have a lot of books in our school library, we do not have enough books in Spanish or bilingual books to be able to have book clubs in Spanish just like in English. We’re already dreaming of the books that we’ll receive when we win this contest!
School Name: High Point Academy
Aurora, CO (Once- or twice-weekly Spanish-language instruction for all K-8 students, taught a full-time, native Spanish teacher.)
Grade: 3rd
Teacher: Marisa Calderon
We need Spanish books because there are no Spanish books in our library. We have students that don’t speak English at all, so these books will give them something to read. And, bilingual books will help us learn Spanish outside of Spanish class. Mrs. C, our Spanish teacher, will be happy that everyone is learning. A Spanish book collection will help us to discover the wonders and mysteries of Spanish and will change our school forever!
School: Grand View Elementary
Los Angeles, CA (Dual Language Program–Spanish Immersion)
Grade: 2nd
Teacher: Ms. Angelita Leyva
I want more books in Spanish for our library because some kids only speak Spanish. We want to learn and speak Spanish. We need more books in Spanish because they will helps us learn Spanish and because they are lots of fun. We learn in two languages, English and Spanish, but there are a lot of English books in our library. There are not enough books in Spanish for all the kids.
School: Union Elementary School
Modoc, IN
Grade: 2nd
Teacher: Cynthia J. Shamy
Union is a small rural school where just about everyone knows each other; however, we recently had new students move in that only speak Spanish. This year our second grade class has taken a huge interest in helping a student learn English, and they are also excited about learning Spanish. We have a brand new Spanish Language program as a result. The class thinks Spanish books that our teacher brings in from home are fun to read and realizes how important it is to learn about other countries and cultures. Winning the Spanish-language and bilingual books would mean we can better include new Spanish-speaking students in everything we do, making them feel a part of the class and not an outsider.
