Like most kids I know, Vanessa and Santiago are crazy about music. Vanessa loves to sing and Santiago loves to dance and play instruments. A few weeks ago, Santiago got a song book from his preschool with all the songs he and his classmates would sing during their annual Christmas show last week.

As soon as Vanessa got a hold of the song book, she started singing out loud as many as the songs she already knew and just reading the ones she didn’t. For days, I was treated to their renditions of “Jingle Bell”s and “Joy to the World” — and I couldn’t help smiling. Unlike a lot of people I know, I love Christmas carols and I don’t mind listening to them all the time during this time of year.

But then it dawned on me that, even though I enjoyed listening to my kids singing Christmas songs, they were all in English. Nothing wrong with that, except that there’s a huge selection of Christmas songs in Spanish and I wanted to make sure they became part of their repertoire too.

I remembered Ana shared the lyrics to some beloved Villancicos last year and I went looking for them and also found the Feliz Navidad YouTube playlist she created last Christmas. It was a great start, but I wanted my kids — especially Vanessa because she loves reading so much— to have their own song book with the lyrics to even more Villancicos.

And so we decided to create a downloadable PDF with the lyrics to 9 popular Christmas songs in Spanish to share with you! Go ahead and print it and teach these beautiful songs to your kids. Vanessa loves the song book and now walks around with both the Spanish and the English versions.

One of my favorite Spanish-language villancicos (holiday songs) is Burrito Sabanero. I wanted my kids to enjoy it as much as I do so I decided to put on our own show with these super cute puppets on a stick. The burrito, the estrellita de Belén, and, of course, our little boy were perfect to go along with the song.

You too can join in the fun!

To make your own puppets here is what you need:

-a ginger bread shaped man and a hat (optional)

-a star cut out in a bright colors

-shapes for your burrito- 2 ovals(small and large- head and body), 4 small rectangles(legs) 1 long triangle cut at the ends(tail),2 ear shapes all in brown, and 1 half of an oval in green(saddle)

- 3 paper towel rolls like the one pictured above

- glue

-scissors

-glitter

-markers

To assemble your burrito you need to adhere the smaller oval to the larger oval.  Add the legs, tail and ears and lastly the little saddle. With a marker ad an eye, a harness around mouth, a nostril and mouth. Also add details to the ears, legs, tail and saddle.

Now would be a good time to decorate your little boy any way you want. We had ours decorated from a previous gingerbread project.

The star must be nice and bright so we added a layer of glue and some fun glitter to make it shine. Wait for it to dry before you move on to next step.

Using glue or any other of sticky adhesive (tape works) mount your burrito, little boy and if dry your star to the paper rolls.

The higher you place them the more space to hold it there will be.

All done! Now lets get the show started! It’s fun to sing along and use your puppets!

The Christmas season/la Navidad is finally here! The air is quickly filling up with the holiday cheer that our familia and all that great food brings. Along with all of the great traditions that come with the holidays, we cannot forget about music! So let´s get ready to practice our villancicos.

Villancicos? Some of you might  know exactly what I’m talking about, and for the rest, you might be more familiar with them than the name leads you to believe. They are Spanish Christmas carols!

Villancicos were common poetic and musical forms during the 15th to 18th century in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. Yup, villancicos have a very long history that will surely get longer as we pass them down to our niños. We have prepared five posts for you with some of the most popular villancicos throughout Spain and Latin America.
