Gardening can be therapeutic and fun! Do you remember Chia pets?

Here’s a fabulous way to introduce your little ones to gardening. Also, a wonderful activity to get the kids exploring textures, plant life and just being silly. With Winter here this is a perfect way to bring the outdoors inside and reirse un poco, who doesn’t need some laughter in their day?

Make sure you work in an area you don’t mind getting dirty. Lay down newspaper and set out your supplies. Let your kids have fun playing with the dirt.

You will need:

disposable cup

wheat grass, ivy or moss

close-up face image

1. Place moss in cup.

2. Follow watering instructions for the plant you choose.

3. Tape picture to cup with the forehead at the end of the top part of the cup.

You can choose to purchase seeds and have your child grow the hair or an already grown plant where they just trim.

For years now I’ve toyed with the idea of growing our own fruit and vegetable garden in a raised bed in our backyard. I took a weekend class, I read several blogs and books and had even kinda figured out how to get it done, and then life got chaotic and we never went through with it.

It’s still something I really want to do because I love the idea of knowing where some of my food came from and also to have one more family-bonding activity. Gardening and growing your own food teaches kids so much about respect for our earth, for the process of making food and even makes them more open to trying different fruits and vegetables if they’ve had an active part in their growing process.

Since I still haven’t figured out how to incorporate into my life the time a full-blown organic fruits and veggies garden requires, I was thrilled to have found out about the Seeds of Change Kids Garden Starter Kits being sold at Walmart. I let my girl decide if we would get the kit with either the pumpkin, lettuce and tomatoes or the watermelon seeds so we could at the very least attempt to start a one-crop garden this year.

She chose her favorite fruit: sandía (watermelon).

We made a little video to tell you all about our watermelon starter kit. As you’ll see, Camila is super excited about this and basically took over the video without any prompt from me–I thought she was just going to sit there and stare at the camera! You’ll also get to see how much true Spanglish—code switching, really-she’s speaking now. Basically, if I speak to her in Spanish, she responds mostly in Spanish; but since I did the video mostly in English, she goes at it in English.

In any case, it’s super cute, modestia aparte!
