It’s officially Easter weekend! The kids and I have been busy preparing for our holiday. Recently my son asked me why not all bunnies had tails. Confused, I thought what he may have seen and where? I asked him why he asked. He didn’t have a straight answer — he’s only 4 years old. I decided to create a fun game just in time for Easter but great all year!

I explained to both my kids that we needed to help the conejito find his colita. I told him we had to toss these fuzzy tails into his bowl and if it landed then maybe it could be his. Our bunny was a boy because my son insisted the bunny was Peter Rabbit.

Here is what we used to create our Conejito sin Colita Game:

2 foam sheets- 1 colored and 1 white

A round lid- cardboard works best

White Poms or Cotton Balls

2 Wiggly eyes

Glue or glue dots

A Marker

Conejito Template -optional- (download below)

DOWNLOAD TEMPLATE HERE

Let’s get started!

1- Cut a strip of foam sheet. Depending on your lid length will vary but we used a 2.5 inches wide strip. Having a gap is ok. It will get covered up with our bunny.

2-Glue around your lid. You may need to hold in place until it sticks.

3- Cut and trace your template onto the foam. Cut our the bunny shape in the colored foam and the ears in white. Glue them in place.

4- Add some wiggly eyes and a cute nose and smile. Glue to the back of your lid where the gap is. Hold in place until secure.

5-All done! Time to play!

We hope you are having a fantastic Spring season and Easter weekend. ¡Felices Pascuas!

Anybody who knows me well knows I’m not a huge fan of crafts because I’m really no good with my hands. But my 6-year-old daughter loves them and so I’m always trying to find easy ones — so I don’t mess everything up — we can do together and have some fun.

That’s why when I found this idea on how to make maracas out of plastic easter eggs I jumped on it! Both my children love music and we have plenty of maracas, but none they’ve made themselves, so they loved the concept once I explained it. And the best part was that it was SUPER easy (and cheap) to make them!

In terms of materials, you only really need four things — most of which you probably already have laying around the house — that you can easily get at your local Walmart.

MATERIALS:

Plastic easter eggs (we used the bigger ones)

Plastic spoons

Printed and/or Color Duck Tape

Beans, rice or small candy

STEPS:

1. Fill the plastic easter egg with whatever material you’ve chosen. We used jelly beans. Whatever you decide to use and the amount will determine the noise made by the maracas.

2. Put one plastic spoon on each side of the egg and start wrapping it with the Duct tape until you cover the whole thing. We made some with color Duct tape and others with printed one. The ones with color Duct tape were decorated by my daughter with Easter-themed stickers. You can also use masking tape and have your kids paint whatever they want on it.

And that’s it!

Vanessa liked them so much that she plans on sharing them with some of her little friend in school.

I have to admit the traditional American Easter celebration with bunnies, egg hunts and such still feels new to me. As much as I grew up with both the U.S. and Salvadoran traditions, in El Salvador Easter week was Semana Santa; and that meant a week of beach and religious celebrations.

This is honestly the first year we’ve gone all out with a visit from the Easter bunny, an egg hunt and, claro, learning how to make cascarones (confetti Easter eggs)! My girl is so privy now of the celebration because of all the input from preschool and she came home last week asking why the Bunny had never visited her house. So this year, it visited.

She also had a blast dyeing eggs, filling them with confetti and smashing them over our heads. I truly love making cascarones because at least I feel the eggs serve some type of purpose. I really have no idea what you’re supposed to do with a batch of hard-boiled, beautifully colored eggs once their use is over? Please enlighten me!

In any case, we’ve had a blast adopting this “new” tradition for our bicultural family and my girl can expect many more years of Easter bunny visits, baskets with chocolate and fun cascarones action.

Speaking of cascarones, last year Roxana wrote a post about her first time making cascaroneswith her kids and taught us how to do them. Well, that post was found by an Associated Press reporter, she interviewed Roxana and wrote a story titled “Cascarones: Latin American tradition of confetti-filled eggs expands in US” which ended up in publications such as the Washington Post and the Houston Chronicle! Now, how’s that for keeping our traditions alive?

This Easter, instead of doing the same old boring egg hunt we do every year, I’ve decided to turn it into an opportunity for Vanessa to practice her Spanish reading skills while hopefully having a ton of fun!

The premise is simple: a scavenger hunt with clues in Spanish, but with a twist. All you’re going to need is a bunch of different color plastic eggs, paper, marker and whatever you’ll need to make your children’s Easter baskets, which I had no problem finding at my local Walmart.

Scrambled Clues

First, come up with a clue that will lead each child to his or her Easter basket. For example, “debajo de la almohada azul en tu cuarto” or “detrás de la puerta de mi baño” or where ever you chose to hide the basket.

Write the clue on a piece of paper and then cut up each word separately. Assign each child a plastic egg color and stick each word into a separte plastic egg. In Vanessa’s case, for example, I know I’ll be assigning her the pink ones. So let’s say I use the second clue, each one of her pink plastic eggs would include a scrap of paper with just one word, such as “detrás,” “puerta,” “baño,” “de” and so on.

Then you need to hide the plastic eggs just like you normally would. Explain the game to your children and have them go hunting for their assigned color. Once they have all their eggs, they have to work on arranging the words to be able to figure out the clue and go get their Easter basket!

I think my daughter, who’s totally into pirates, maps, clues and treasure hunts, is going to absolutely love this! And she’ll get to practice her Spanish reading skills along the way. Can’t wait to see if she’s able to unscramble the words and figure out the clue!

Disclosure: As part of the Walmart Moms program, SpanglishBaby received compensation and the product to facilitate this post.
Spring, is near! Hurrah! Hurrah!

Between the winter weather and rain you may be stuck in your casa, more than you would like to be. So pull out your craft box and let’s get started.

Your main supplies are basic things you may already have in your house: cereal box and tissue paper. You can also use leaves, Spanish moss, ribbon or scrapbook paper to personalize your Easter basket.

These are great to use as party favors, Easter class treats or for your little ones at home.

For the precious little chick you can go here for the easy instructions on how to make it.

What You’ll Need:

Glue

Ribbon

Pipe Cleaner

Tissue paper

Cereal box

Instructions

Primero, cut your tissue paper into long strands. Then you will cut the strand the desired size of the rosette and twist them. I personally don’t like my rosettes to have a tight look to them so I loosely twist them for a puffy rosette look. For my mini cereal box I used 5 rows of 4 Rosettes.

Segundo, you will begin to roll the tissue paper creating your rosette.

Tercero, glue them on to the box.

Cuarto, make a hole on each side of the box so that you can insert your pipe cleaner and tape it on the inside for additional support.

Just four easy steps for this adorable personalized Easter basket.
