I am a big fan of Little Pim‘s Spanish learning products, and this app is no exception. Learn Spanish with Little Pim: “Colors” is a newly released iPad app that introduces Spanish colors by mixing English and Spanish vocabulary.

There are a few different play modes, including Read Aloud and Question & Answer. It works like an ebook, with each page offering different options for interaction. One of the more fun options is for parents to record their own voices reading the book.

Kids can also color each page, save, and share the results.

Although this app is best suited for toddlers who are just learning Spanish color vocabulary, my 5-year-old enjoyed it and got to practice his noun-adjective agreement. He forgets to say, for example, “el globo amarillo” instead of “amarilla,” so Little Pim gives him a subtle reinforcement of the rules. Sometimes, kids take an adorable panda more seriously than their parents!

Now that my son has started English-only school, I am even more concerned with giving him supplementary learning activities in Spanish. Sanoen’s To The Farm! iPad app is a great choice for several reasons.

To the Farm!/¡A la granja! offers different levels of spelling farm animal words, appropriate for ages 0-6. Babies and toddlers will enjoy the animal sounds and cute pictures, and children who are learning to read can see the words in full frases. There is a parent guide that explains how to use the app for different ages and how the auditory and visual stimulation work together to teach your child new words.

Another thing I love about To the Farm? The soothing background music that acts as a default whenever my son gets up and leaves the game or pauses to think. It’s nothing like the obnoxious sounds included in many child-friendly games and apps!

The best thing about this app, by far, is the fact that it’s offered in 6 languages! Once your child masters English and Spanish, he/she can learn a few words in French, German, Catalán, or Chinese!

We may have a bookshelf full of bilingual books in our house, but sometimes it’s fun to mix it up. The world of apps makes it easy to do just that. Instead of simply reading a story and maybe talking about it for a few minutes, we can extend the benefit of Spanish stories by letting our kids explore apps like Learn Spanish: Little Blue Jackal by Niyaa.

This iPad app is a high-quality learning tool that can be used to encourage both English and Spanish proficiency. Your preschoolers or elementary schoolers will love touching the pictures and learning over 50 Spanish words in Level 1, but it doesn’t end there. Then, they will advance to Spanish phrases in Level 2, and finally, listen to the story about the (un)importance of outward appearances in either English or Spanish in Level 3. After reading, they will get to play Memory and Feed the Jackal, as well as color some of the pages from the story.

What I love about this app in particular are a couple unique features: the Parent/Child Comprehension activity, which promotes excellent discussion of the moral in either language, and the Sleep Mode, which can be turned on if you only want to listen to the story without visuals. A great bedtime option!
