For many families, the coming months are filled with gatherings, family and muchísimo español. Playing question games together provides an opportunity to tell family stories, talk about our values and laugh together. Of course, you know your friends and family, but this simple question game will help you all get to know each other aun mejor.

This printable board game is a fun Spanish language activity for children. Many children love to have the floor and answer questions about themselves. Playing with family and friends, they get to talk about their ideas and experiences with people who are important to them. For Spanish language learners, you can add questions at any level. They can be as simple as ¿Cuál es tu libro favorito? or as complicated and conceptual as you like. Also, the structure of board games includes everyone equally. More reserved children (and adults) have a chance to share and others have the opportunity to listen.

The game has a set of 24 question cards. If you want to make more and need ideas, there are many lists of “conversation starter” questions online. Print the game board and cards on cardstock and laminate them if you want them to be more durable.

There are two simple ways to play.

1) Players move ahead by rolling a die and following any instructions on the square. Just take turns rolling, drawing a question card, answering. The first one to the meta wins.

2) You move ahead by rolling a die. If you land on a blue square, you answer the question yourself. If you land on a green square, you ask the question to someone else. If you land on a pink square you can choose to answer the question yourself or ask someone else. The first one to the meta wins.

¿Qué Color Es?

What You’ll Need: Hula hoops and bean bags in the main primary colors.

Set Up: Lay the hula hoops out on the floor and have the children stand around them in any order. The teacher holds on to the same colored bean bags.

How to Play: Toss a bean bag to a child and say “¿que color es?” The child should then throw the bean bag into the matching hula hoop and yell out the color in Spanish.

Why it Works: Lango classes are taught using the Adventure Learning method, which combines movement, interaction, music, play-acting, repetition, and full language-immersion to assure that children learn and retain vocabulary.

¿Qué hay en la mochila?

¡Vamos a la escuela! This is a great activity to teach and reinforce Spanish vocabulary and phrases associated with school.   Kids will have fun guessing and having hands on bilingual fun:

Items needed:

La mochila- backpack

El papel–paper

Las tijeras–scissors

Los crayones–crayons

El lápiz– pencil

Los marcadores–markers

El libro–book

*add any other school related item that your child would relate to.

Activity:

1. Lay out items and name all items in Spanish as you fill the backpack.
2. Take turns reaching in and pulling out an item, asking “ ¿qué es?
3. Once the children are familiar with the vocabulary, give them specific items to reach in and grab.  They will have fun feeling for the items and trying to find the correct one.
4. Test their memory and comprehension at the end of the activity by asking “¿qué hay en la mochila? Have fun trying to rename all items that are packed in the back pack.
5. Language extension:  for continued language practice, use the items to illicit conversation.  Try sorting items by size or color, or ask them to describe each item.  Example: ¿ De qué color es el lápiz?  ¿Para qué lo usas?  ¿Cuántos marcadores hay?

Objective: Have fun creating an “ocean in a bottle” craft while teaching beach-themed vocabulary. This activity also offers the opportunity to use comparative adjectives as your child observes differences between their “mini-Ocean” and a beach they may have visited in real life.

Ocean in a Bottle – El Océano

Materials needed:
• plastic water or soda bottles,
• blue or green food coloring,
• baby oil or vegetable oil, tiny shells,
• sparkles or gold glitter for sand.
1. Fill the water bottle 2/3 full with water and tint it with the food coloring and add oil.
2. Fill bottle to about 1/2 inch of the rim.
3. Add tiny shells, glitter, or other sea-related items.
4. Glue the bottle shut and place tape around the top to seal the bottle to prevent the oily liquid from leaking out.
5. When you tip the bottle it will look like rolling ocean waves.
Language Practice:
• Shake the bottle back and forth and ask children to tell you what they see.
• Encourage them to use these words and describe how it is like the ocean.
• Continue the exposure in the target language by conversing about what they see and making connections with the child’s prior knowledge of the ocean. Ex: “ Mira las olas… son grandes… ¿cuántas conchas hay en la botella? Has visto conchas en la arena? Etc etc.

Vocabulary:

El agua- water

las olas- waves

El mar- sea

la arena- sand

El océano- ocean

las conchas- shells
