After having my daughter (who is going to be 3 in December) I realized that teaching her Spanish was going to be a great challenge!  I grew in a small border town where everyone spoke Spanish and English. All non school related activities were in Spanish.  For example, my dance instructor spoke Spanish.  In addiiton, I am a School Counselor who listens to stories of Latino children who either refuse to speak or learn English or refuse to speak or learn Spanish made me realize I had a greater obstacle to overcome. Listening to my students reasons inspired me to enroll my daughter in a Spanish class.  Although, both my husband and I are bilingual and speak to her in Spanish I also realized that if she is not brought up with others (her peers) who embrace the cultural and the language she will also be sitting in the counselor's office sharing her story of reasons she doesn't want to speak or learn either of the languages. I also began teaching children Spanish so that my daughter would grow up in an environment where she can observe how others value her Spanish language!

Despeartely seeking experiences to raise a bilingual and bicultural child in Phoenix, Arizona I was disappointed of the lack opprotunites.  I came across many "walls," but that inspired me to get connected with my comadres and I organized a group. http://www.meetup.com/meetup-c…..Madrehood/

So, if you’re looking to connect with others or find support in raising your child bilingual (English/Spanish) and bi-cultural– this group is for you!  This group is not just for mamas, but also for any abuelas who is raising a child!

Hi Daniela,

Thanks so much for sharing your story with us and the link to your bilingual playgroup.  One of the best ways to expose your kids to a minority language is for them to have peers they can share the language with.

Your efforts and initiative will pay off!
