Hi everyone,

I am in desperate need of guidance.  I was born in Colombia but raised in NYC and my husband is American we have three kids a 6 year old girl Thalia, 5 year old Cameron, and soon to be 2 year old Evan.  I have always struggled with speaking to my kids in Spanish and my excuse was that 98% of my day is in English until recently I have a job in which 70% requires me to utilize my spanish.  I am hoping that I am not too late to be able to get my children speaking and understanding spanish.  The baby knows alot of words but the other two do not really want to talk.  I need to learn to make it fun and a game so they can get excited.  What should I do??? Yell

PS: I love this site!!!!

Hi, I noticed your post because I am originally from Dayton, Ohio! May I suggest having a look at

which gives a nice overview of some important points.

I would like to say, do not give up. I think at the ages of your Thalia and Cameron, people get discouraged, even if they had been speaking to them in another language from the beginning, because that is a time of a lot of changes for the children in their language development, and children as they get into school ages often seem like they are not "following the program" that we so carefully laid out for them at home. Keep at it! I promise every effort you make will have a great payoff in the long term.

I know first-hand the Hispanic community where you live is not huge, but try to connect your children with it as much as you can. You have the right idea in trying to make it fun, and if they interact with other children who also speak Spanish, that makes it even more fun, and helps them begin to understand how cool it is too. That will also help you feel more supported and motivated!

Good luck and please let us know how it is going!
