Hello there,
I'm starting this topic in the hopes of hearing your story about how your family has reacted to raising Baby with more than 1 language.
My husband and I live in the United States where the political system has some anti-immigrant or English-only feeling these days. So, honestly what we expected was that if we had any difficulty, it would be with my side of the family, who are non-Hispanic, speak only English. Where I grew up the community is really not diverse. However, on the contrary, they have been absolutely supportive without exception!!! Ironically, it's my husband's side of the family, the Spanish-speaking side, who sometimes don't support what we're doing and think we should push English with our son and not worry about him knowing Spanish or not. It seems like they just see how it is for them living in this country, trying to learn English and really struggling. I know from researching it that our son's abilities in English will not suffer from learning Spanish, and I know that since Spanish is the minority language here we need to actively encourage it if we want him to know it. The challenge is convincing the Spanish-speakers in his life, so they will speak to him in Spanish!!
I hope to hear your story! I need all the ideas I can get! Thanks!
