I have been searching around for language immersion schools in Los Angeles (close to Glendale mostly). I was hoping to find a Spanish program that goes from K through high school, or at least middle school. Thanks to Spanglish baby, we now know of:

- Glendale Unified School district Spanish, Italian, Korean and German K-5th grade program
- WorldSpeak

And I have also heard of

- Kinderland German pre-school

- Language Door (Saturday school only)

- Dutch School LA (Saturday only)

- LILA School (French Pre-K through highschool) in Pasadena, Tarzana, Los Feliz and OC

- Bubbles and Colors Spanish pre-school in West LA

- "Beyond Pre-K in Spanish" at Veterans Park in Culver City

- Goethe International Charter School in Santa Monica and I think soon in Marina Del Rey

- El Marino elementary in Culver City Spanish and Japanese

- Grandview elemenary Spanish pre-K in Mar Vista

- Claire Fontaine French pre-school in Venice

- City Terrace Elementary – Chinese elementary close to UCLA

- Multicultural Learning Center Charter Spanish elementary in Canoga Park

- Le Lycee French K thru High School on the West Side

I hope this helps someone…it would be great if anyone would care to add to this list!

Regards, Maria

Maria, thanks so much for this amazing list.  You're awesome!  I know already of many LA area parents who will benefit from this.

I want to add Grupo Educa.

It's a Heritage Language program which was formed by a group of parents looking to expose their children to Spanish and a deep connection to their roots.

By definition, heritage language programs are meant to supplement the standard education children receive at either public or private schools.  In Grupo Educa's case, they meet every Sunday in an elementary school in Pasadena.

I'm planning on visiting them next Sunday.  I'll write back with more info :)

Hi, I'm new to this forum and just starting looking into schools for my daughter who will go to kinder in 2011.  I'm very interested in dual immersion spanish but don't know much about it yet.

I did learn that Aldama Elementary in Highland Park (northeast LA) has a new dual immersion program that does 50/50 I believe, and this is either their 2nd or 3rd year.  I'm having a hard time finding any info about it though.  Anyone know more?

I'm also interested in Franklin elementary in Glendale.  It has Spanish, Italian, German and Korean i think, and we're interested in the Spanish.

Here is a list of some of the Dual programs in California. It has many of the programs, but there might be some that are not listed:

There are tons of other programs in the LA area also that are not on the list and can be found on the Center for Applied Linguistics website that Spanglishbaby has on their Dual Immersion blog posts.

My recommendation would be to go for a 90/10 program-research shows that kids score the same in english, but kids in 90/10 programs have more proficiency in Spanish than kids in 50/50 programs. Just my two cents!

Katie:

For more info on dual immersion education as well as on Glendale's Unified District schools, such as Franklin, you can go here. The first few articles are from a whole week we dedicated to this subject in particular and in which we showcased Glendale's dual language immersion programs!

Good luck and thanks for participating in the forums!

I'd like to add a dual immersion public school program that recently started in Fall 2009 in Pasadena CA.

Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) began offering 2 dual immersion programs (K-6). Spanish/English is offered at their San Rafael Elementary campus in Pasadena and Mandarin Chinese/English at their Burbank Elementary campus in Altadena.

There are 2 school tours being held at San Rafael in 2009: Weds Dec 2 10am and Weds Dec 9 10am. Call to confirm:

San Rafael Elementary School 1090 Nithsdale Road, Pasadena 91103  (626) 793-4189

http://sanrafael.pasadenausd.org/

Call Burbank directly to inquire about tours:

Burbank Elementary School 2046 N. Allen Ave., Altadena 91001 (626) 798-6769

http://www.pasadena.k12.ca.us/…..ls/burbank

My daughter is in the 1st grade cohort at San Rafael. We are very pleased with the dedication and hard work of the teachers, administrators, and parents in getting this program up and running. There is an enormous groundswell of enthusiasm and optimism.

Former director of Glendale's successful dual immersion program Alice Petrossian is heading up the PUSD dual immersion program.
