Immigration has been a topic from the moment our children began to question the difference between "grandma" and "abuela". I am married to an American, and both my children had many questions where I am from ... The subject is often spoken as my daughter, who is older, often has questions about my childhood... She also has questions about the food- so the subject is spoken on an every day basis..

We talk to our son frequently about immigration and about how it was that his dad came to New York with his family from Colombia many years ago. This week our son shocked us (and made us proud) when he told us about a conversation he had with a classmate on the bus. "What are you?" he asked his Peruvian friend. "I'm Colombian," he offered before he friend could reply. Boy, did that make us :-) !!!

We recently had a talk with my son, who had to do a family tree and we were discussing my grandparents and why they lived in mexico and why my parents live her in the united states, and how a long journey they had to make to get here. Didn't go into details with him, he is only 8, I am not sure when I would truely expose him to the tough journey my mother made to this country with my two oldest sisters any suggestions.

My baby is 9 months old. We tell him that one grandpa is from Haiti and Abuelito is from Peru. He hear them talk to him on the phone and I think he can tell there are differnet accents. We will definitely talk to him more about immigration and that mama is an immigrant to the USA. Plan to get dual citizenship for him before too long. I'd love a chance at the book.

Although we haven't had discussions directly about immigration with our 3 & 1 year olds, we have dear friends with whom we interact & love that tell us about their homeland & culture. There is an important work of legislation in the works for children of immigrants without citizenship status to get help they need to fulfill dreams of education and careers called the DREAM Act that I would promote. Please visit dreamactivist.org to sign a petition & write your legislators.

So far I tell my two year old where his great grandmother/grandfather lives (en Mexico) and that his abuelita was born there. When we go to festivals and there is a Marachi or Baile Folklorico I alway mention his ancestry. Immigration is part of his family history that I want to share.

I have an infant and a young toddler so its a bit too soon to talk to them about immigration. But when they are older I will certainly talk to them. I am so proud of being hispanic and I want them to be even more proud of having the roots, heritage, and culture that makes us such a great people. I want them to understand that the immigration struggles we have today are very similar to those that all Americans have had at one time or another. I'm so glad that there are great books that will help us illustrate this story!

Immigration is a topic that is a frequent topic of conversation at our dinner table as it comes up at least weekly in our household.

My husband came to the U.S. from El Salvador as an undocumented immigrant when he was 18 years old. We discuss the news and politics with our kids all the time. I explained to the children why my husband and I went to the Immigration March in D.C. earlier this year and I always remind them that they're very fortunate that their father was able to become a U.S. Citizen. They know they are fortunate to go to bed at night knowing their family will stay intact. Not all children are so lucky.

Congratulations to René. Thank you for writing these kinds of stories.
