We have a world map to track and talk about friends and missionaries around the world that we pray for. Whenever we read about stories from cultures from around the world we look for them on this map. We also use the map to refer to where our family lives in other parts of the country.

My oldest daughter absolutely loves geography. It is her favorite subject next to music and of course Spanish! We have several maps, but I’m always looking for more. She likes to know where everyone of her friends and family lives and also where different animals, music, foods, languages originate in terms of locales. Another way that we teach geography is to talk about and find places we’d like to visit and relate them to spots on the map. So if we’re planning to visit grandparents in Baja, we find the nearest or coolest beach to them, we find people online(from blogs and youtube) that she’s interested in, we find out what kinds of foods grow there and we figure out what we would do next based on our location, who we would visit next, etc.

My son is only 4 but we started by discussing where all of his relatives are and explaining the distance and some of the differences in seasonal activities that there are. He can’t wait to go see his Tio this winter and build a snowman!
