{Vanessa in front of her school the first day of Kinder}
As many of you know, my 5-year-old daughter, Vanessa, started Kindergarten last Monday. This was a momentous milestone for everyone in our family and so my husband and I walked our firstborn the two blocks from our home to the school armed with cameras, videocameras and iPhones to capture it all.
Growing up, I went mostly to private schools which meant that my back to school photos were of me in my school uniform. In other words, pretty boring. It wasn’t until I moved to this country as a teenager that I got to wear street clothes to school. Needless to say, I was terrified because I only had a few weeks to figure out what was in at my new school so I didn’t look like a total dork – hugely important for a 14-year-old!
Vanessa and I had gone shopping for clothes the weekend before and I let her choose what she’d be wearing the first day which – surprise, surprise – was pretty much all pink! I actually love that her plaid skirt looks kind of like the ones I used to wear back in private school, except mine wasn’t as vibrant!
I took a few photos of Vanessa, but I was a bit overwhelmed by the whole situation and while I didn’t cry hysterically, I did shed a lot of some tears. My husband took tons of video and we were actually interviewed by one of the local TV stations and so now we’ll have professional footage of Vanessa’s first day of Kindergarten! You can’t beat that, right?

I go crazy with the photos and videos, so on the first day of school I shoot plenty of both posed shots and candid shots as the kids get ready, eat breakfast, pack their backpacks, and get ready to go out to the bus stop. I have started doing short “interviews” right before they leave and again when they come in after that first day to see how their expectations lived up to everything they experienced that day and to find out their first impressions of their teachers, classes, new classmates, etc. I hope it’ll be a nice documentary they’ll be able to have for years to come. Thanks!

Pictures, of course and I always do one like my Mom did of me… walking away from the camera toward school or the bus.

We take lots of pictures, and we also take video. I’m not sure what we’re going to do once the Flip camera quits having supporting software (I think it said 2013?), but we’ll find another video camera.
When my kids were little, I would take a picture of them with their backpacks and lunch boxes before they got on the bus.

I’ll take a video of my daughters first day in the second grade.
Taking pictures of the kids getting on the bus. Thanks.
Sigh, not so good at that… didn’t really do anything for my daughter’s first day at school. But, in my defense, she’d been going to preschool since she was 3, and I was there as a helper for several of the first months, and then she just kept on going… no real ‘first day’
We have a special breakfast & take pics.

to document the first day of my babies school i took a lot of pictures and added them all to a scrap book page especially for this day.
I document the first day of school like most people, with lots of pictures, but I also do some journaling in a blank book journal of my thoughts. The book is meant to be given to my daughter when she’s the right age to enjoy it. It’s for all major and minor happenings, and school certainly qualifies.
