My Mom Just Got Back from Peru with a Suitcase Full of ‘Encargos’

Posted by: | 21 Comments

“I’m never brining any of you any more encargos,” my mom complained as I help her lift the two huge suitcases you see in the picture above into my car’s trunk at Denver International Airport yesterday. She just got back from a six-week long trip to Peru and both my sister and I bombarded her with our lista de encargos even before she left. In fact, mine kept on growing while she was already there and I remembered I alsoRead More ...

Reading in English and Translating into Spanish… at 5 years old!

Something truly amazing happened yesterday! As I’ve mentioned before, Vanessa has been learning to read in school and I’m quite impressed by how well she’s doing and how quickly she’s perfecting her skills. Not to mention the truly incredible thing she’s doing by transferring those reading skills into Spanish all by herself. Vanessa likes to read to her little brother, but last night, he chose a book in English and asked her to read it. She knows perfectly well that SantiagoRead More ...

As soon as I put the Salsa para gatitos y perritos CD in our car’s CD player, my kids started swaying to the music. And who wouldn’t? This magical CD contains 15 songs that are alternatively sung in English and Spanish. The rhythms are catchy and the lyrics easy to memorize so that even little children like my 2-year-old can sing-along. I was so enthralled by the quality of the music of my pick for this month’s Scholastic Parent CircleRead More ...

Although in her case, she really does a lot of the transferring the other way around, from what I like to think as her second language (English) into her native one (Spanish). Of course, it could be argued that in a case like hers, where she has been exposed to both languages pretty much since birth, it’s hardRead More ...

Heritage Language Books: A Bilingual Gem {Giveaway}

Posted by: | 53 Comments

A gem, that’s how I describe the three books I got last week from Heritage Language – a husband and wife team who noticed the huge need for bilingual books to help both Spanish and English language learners and decided to create their own books with audio. First of all, the books are well-written both in English and in Spanish. The best part? The translations are not literal, which means that the Heritage Language folks totally get it. Translating wordRead More ...
