I also struggle to find ways to encourage my older boys (9 & 11 years old, too) to speak! Our 11 year old is at an age when he really wants to show his independence. We were able to capitalize on that this summer when we were in Cuernavaca by allowing him to run little errands (down the block to the panaderia, etc) by himself. We've also been talking about letting him do a summer study program in Mexico by himself in another few years, and he's somewhat willing to practice his Spanish in an attempt to get ready for that.

What I would *love* to find, but haven't, is an incredible Spanish-speaking teenage boy who could hang out with my boys, doing "guy things"--video games, sports, etc.--in Spanish. We live in a small town with very few Spanish speakers, so that particular goal may never happen.

My boys are big readers, so another thing I'd love to find is a great series of chapter books that are only available in Spanish, so they'd have no choice but to read in Spanish. Does anyone know of any books like that? They're particularly fond of Harry Potter and Artemis Fowl-type books.

I'd also be interested in finding a Webkinz-like website that is in Spanish. We really limit their time in front of a computer, so that would be a big incentive. Does anyone know of anything like that?

Sandra, since our boys are at the same ages, if you'd be interested in emailing each other with ideas, send me an email at patricia18@juno.com.
