Dear Jeffrey,
I have almost the same problem. My daughter is almost 3 and just started speaking her first words a couple months ago. She is starting to pick up words fast now. Her father only speaks Spanish and I speak English. She is being seen by an Infants and toddlers program once a week which has helped. I just wanted to say I disagree with the professionals saying bilingualism doesn't cause speech delay. All the bilingual families I spoke to say there children spoke later than others. Other websites will also say it causes delay, they're learning twice the amount of words as a monolingual children. Its normal. Its doesnt mean they're less intelligent. I would just be patient. We bought some sign language videos "signing time" which have helped ENORMOUSLY! She's able to use the signing and connect them to the meaning of words. Many parents have benefited from these videos. Einstein didnt talk until he was 3. I dont like the time frame professionals use for speech development. All kids are different. They rated my daughter's speech level to be at the 9 month level when she was 27 months. She starting to mimic all our words now and she speaks both languages. Dont give up! Hope this helped a little.

Can you both hear the cheers from our corner of the bilingual world!?!?!?!

We are applauding your efforts as a family Jeffrey and your amazingly helpful and detailed reply.

I add nothing other than BRAVO to you both for speaking openly about a subject surrounded by myths that you both are helping to get rid of!
