What a great solution. I am actually wondered this is the first of its type. My puppy and I went to different Puppy kindergartens and while they were all good for socializing, the one run through the Ohio State Vet School was so exiting because of the chance to get more detailed insight into animal behavior. It was also just surprising to be around people who delighted in all things regarding to the dogs.

Here living in Houston, Texas over the last 11 years, I've known several Hispanic coworkers and colleagues who spoke no English until they were school age, but then through the years of school in English, and then their parents allowing or even encouraging moving into English at home, the kids got very rusty in their Spanish. As they got older, they regretted being able to speak only "kitchen Spanish" or not being confident to even open their mouths to speak at all. People have even told me it probably would have made them a happier person in high school if they had felt more positive about using Spanish or being Hispanic instead of "trying to be white". And a person who spoke only Spanish in their most formative years would come to me, a "gringa" who learned Spanish as a second language, to help them compose an email or understand a document at work. I really feel and I always tell people in that situation, instead of mourning that they don't speak Spanish as well as they could have, they should celebrate what they do have (much more than most Americans get the chance for!). But getting to know about this has made me very committed to raising my son fully bilingual, including reading and writing. I sincerely hope Carlos will have many great teachers like Ellen to help his mother show him how really valuable and important speaking Spanish can be. One more idea for the Mami - if she lives in an area where there are not many Spanish speakers - offer herself as a "conversation partner" (whether formally, or informally as a friend through church, neighbor, etc.) to someone who wants to learn Spanish. Maybe there are teachers or parents in Ellen's school who would like someone to practice Spanish with. Carlos would have a great example and he couldn't help but be impressed that adults want to work to learn Spanish.
