One of the best strategies is to use whole language bilingual resources from the very beginning. If you learn "flashcard" style (e.g. colors, numbers, names of things, and very short phrases) it is very easy to get stuck. Not only that, you'll acquire very bad learning habits. Also, as I like to say, you could memorize a whole dictionary and still not know how to speak a language! Bilingual resources are great, BUT you have to know how to use them well and again avoid going back and forth all the time, constant translation is NOT effective in the long run.
I'll be presenting a free webinar on the topic for "Early Investigators Club" on March 9th. While the title says "administrators" it's also appropriate for parents, teachers, and language entrepreneurs. To enroll, click here: http://tinyurl.com/4pxyqza.
There's lots of us non-native speakers on the net teaching our kids a second language. I'm doing as much as possible to expose my little biscuit to as much Spanish as possible. I'm also increasing my knowledge each day. I take this very seriously so I am not content with increasing my vocab one or two words at a time. I put in serious study time each day. In addition to reading and watching native materials, I am also doing two audio courses that come highly recommended by those who take them. So good luck and whatever you decide, know that it is possible!
