Interesting post. Language diversity and role models is incredibly important in our family as well.

While we have sought out health care practitioners that speak specific languages, it has been more about ensuring we are completely understood when dealing with medical issues (a friend once had a doctor confuse epidural and episiotomy because his English wasn’t very good). For me, that mean that although I speak three languages with a great degree of fluency, I want to give birth and deal with other major medical events in my mother tongue.

But beyond language, I want my children to see people from a wide variety of different cultural backgrounds in different positions of power and leadership in our community. So I’d be happy to have them visit health care practitioners of any cultural background as long as clear communication is possible.
