One of the tasks I dread the most when the weather starts getting warmer is our annual garage cleanup. We normally tackle this in early spring, but the weather has been crazy in Colorado and it’s only in the last couple of weeks that it has actually gotten warmer, so we finally decided the time had come — especially because I got these really cool, versatile and new Rubbermaid All Access Storage Containers that got me pretty excited about re-organizing the entire space.
I’m actually a bit embarrassed to show this before picture because it’s such a mess. In the winter months, our garage pretty much becomes a repository for anything and everything that we don’t want inside the house, and it can get pretty scary. But we spend so much time outside during the summer biking, hiking, camping and at the pool, so we are forced to organize the garage our we end up running out of space fairly quickly.
We started by taking EVERYTHING out and separating it all into three piles: trash, donation and stuff to keep. We filled two trash cans and three boxes full of donations. Everything else went back in, but in a much more organized way.
For starters, all of the kids’ bike-related stuff went into one of the medium Rubbermaid containers — available at Walmart for $29.94 for a set of two — which I put on the floor, so both of them could have easy access to it. Same thing for a bunch of their summer toys: sidewalk chalk and paint, bubbles, frisbee, balls, etc, which went on top in the smaller container.
My kids love the clear drop-down window, which makes it really easy to see what’s inside, but also super easy for them to reach for what they want without having to open the lid on top.
Here’s an after picture of the garage. We think it looks amazing and ready for us to enjoy the summer to the fullest!
