I'm amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I come across a blog
that's equally educative and engaging, and let me tell you,
you have hit the nail on the head. The issue is something that too few folks are speaking intelligently about.
I'm very happy I found this during my hunt for something regarding this.

Thanks for the great article! We too have traveled extensively pre-child. We are hoping to make an extended stay in Colombia next summer. I was wondering if you have ever done an immersion trip there and if you would recommended any language schools there? I am just starting my research and I am open to just about anything. We have friends in Bogota and Bucaramanga but would like to see other parts of the country. On another note, I agree with Beth. The $14 stroller from Walmart was a lifesaver for me last summer traveling with my 1.5 year old. He is so strong, and so active, many times it was the only safe place I had to put him while in the airport or traveling around Bogota. I was especially glad we had it on Sunday when everyone gets out and walks, bikes, and runs the closed off streets of Bogota. We were able to join in and enjoy the morning strolling the streets and eating empanadas thanks to the inexpensive stroller.

I ditto the advice about carriers instead of strollers -- sort of. I'm rather small-statured, my son is too big for me with a carrier, and I'm usually the only adult traveling. I take a small cheap umbrella-style stroller and it's a lifesaver coming and going in the airports, and times we've really had a long walk (taxi/bus not always available where we go). The important thing is to get the cheap flimsy-looking kind. Mine was $14 at walmart. It's lightweight enough I can literally lift it up or down some steps or across obstacles with a sleeping child in it. It's skinny enough to maneuver the dirt roads, crater-sized ruts, and sidewalks (where they exist) full of street vendors. The wheels actually are more durable than expensive kinds in muddy conditions, and if they do break it's easy to get a local repair (even a simple disc cut from a piece of scrap sheet metal is a possible replacement - actually that's almost what they are in the first place - I saw a local person using a stroller like that). If I were like backpacking with backpacks instead of suitcases and sleeping a different place every night, I wouldn't take it. But folded up it's not hard to carry with your luggage -- and if you leave it at the house and it gets stolen, hey it was $14. With a little practice i figured out how to sort of tip it so the child is almost laying back while you push, or prop the handles on a chair, while he sleeps and I fan him :-)
