a coworker of mine has been telling everyone about Tulum for a few years, ever since he boondoggled spending some time there on the end of a business trip nearby. he says the Corona commercials are filmed there. i dunno if that is true but it's very clear he must have turned into this Tulum missionary for a reason!

You lived in Playa del Carmen for a year! OH! that would be my perfect place to be! I took a sabbatical and spent a month in the Yucatan in 07. Olivia was 20 months at the time! We spent a week in Tulum at the Dreams resort - It was beyond beautiful. I've been the Tulum ruins and beach about a half dozen other trips and it's my favorite!
On that same trip, we spent a few days in Merida, Chichen Itza (we stayed at the gorgeous Hacienda Chichen Itza and it was great to be at the ruins before the day crowds), then we also spent a few days in Cancun, and then took the ferry over to Cozumel for the last 4 days of the trip.
