Another great way to get rid of clothes–take clothes with you that you are ready to part with. Wear them on your trip, but then leave them behind. You’ll have more room in your bag for other things. I’ll be doing this on our Peru trip so that I will have room to bring back books and things to decorate my home and classroom.

Dariela, I love the word cachivaches!! I think it goes perfect, no? St. Jude’s accepts any kind of greeting card all year-round. Just go to their website linked here and you’ll get more info! I think it’s an awesome way to recycle and, to top it off, the kids learn about business in the process.

I know exactly what you mean about the magazines. Yo también tengo el mismo problema. I think that at some point I talked to someone about donating them to a nursing home or to doctor’s offices en las zonas pobres… but I never did anything about it. Yo también odio tirarlas… If you find somewhere to donate them, please let me know!

How funny, Karolena, my husband is also the one who’s been pushing me to change my ways!!
I totally know what you mean about how moving is the best time to go through all your stuff. We HAD to do that 5 years ago when we moved from Miami to Denver and it was absolutely awesome. Although, I think I went a bit overboard because once we were in our new house, I realized there were a few things I’d given away that would’ve been useful in the new house! Ja!

I had forgotten that word! We used it a lot: Cachivaches! I also tend to accumulate stuff and I’m always separating bins of things to donate. But it’s nice to give to a cause like the ones you found. How specific is that about the Christmas cards?? So cool! I still need a place were I can donate magazines and know they will have good use. I hate to throw the to the trash even if it’s the recycle bin!

I have always had this tendency, but my husband has done his best to rid me of it, or at least lessen its effects. It’s definitely genetic, though, because my family helped to throw away/give away tons of books, baskets, keepsakes, souvenirs, etc. from my grandparents’ house, and then I see the same “piling up” occurring at my parents’ house.
I think it helps if you have to move; it forces you to go through your stuff and realize what you really need… and it helps if you have a voice of reason, like I do in my husband, who says, why do we have a box full of rocks, baseball cards and old greeting cards??

Ah, thanks for the vocab word. I keep too many things “just in case I need them”. But now with a baby I don’t have that luxury because we don’t have enough space as it is. We still have too much stuff though, but at least I am getting better at throwing old things away.
