Thanks so much for the lovely comments, everyone! I am so lucky to have so much support, both in my day-to-day life and online, and it means so much. Melanie, I go to support group meetings and talk to parents whose children are older, so I've heard many stories and know what you mean. I'm absolutely terrified of what lies ahead, actually, but as cliché as it sounds, the only way for me to take it is one day at a time or it's all just too overwhelming.

Lisa Gee, keep at it! I know all about resistant four-year-olds. :-)

Worry is a natural instinct to protect your children. And as much as I love teachers (being that my whole life is dedicated to educating and helping teachers), the school system in general sometimes is a big machine that isn't responsive to special education and struggling students as students get higher in the grades. I don't want to sound negative, but I think that it is always good to be vigilant and keep your eye on things, making sure that teachers are well equipped to work with special needs students, etc. Parents such as yourself can be an instrumental role in helping the system move forward. If you ever feel that teachers or the school needs assistance in meeting your child's needs, do not hesitate or be shy about demanding that structures are put into place or the personnel receive the training and staff development needed.

Kim, what an absolutely beautiful post. You had me doing the happy dance with, and for, you!

You are incredibly fortunate to have such supporting people around you and your kids. Spanish is the language your sons already associate with love, warmth and family. You´ve already established that, so you´re on a great path to success.

Wow Kimberly. You are an amazing parents. I think most parents really do their best to support their kids and provide a great environment for them and I haven't read all of your previous postings ... I am a Puerto Rican woman raised in southern California, by parents who -- at the time -- thought it'd be best to teach us only English. Now I am married to a American from Wisconsin and while struggling with my own Spanish, struggle to ensure my Colorado born four and six-year-old sons remember that they can and are bilingual. While most parents would use the "excuse" of their kids' learning challenges to stop them from pursuing their language, you have transformed it into a tool of power! Congratulations to both you and your husband. I do the "happy dance" if my ever-resistant four year old responds with a "si" or "no" in spanish. I can only IMAGINE your joy. You are great parents (doing their best)! Well done.
