Thanks for sharing your experiences. They sound wonderful!! It makes me wish I still had family in Mexico with whom I could spend an entire month. I guess a week in CA with my family will have to do.
Buena suerte!

Ana Lilian, I think we might be! I laughed yesterday when I read your post, knowing mine would be published today. I can't wait to hear about your daughter's experiences in preschool--it's a brilliant idea, and one that had never occurred to me.

Carisa, that is uncanny! I often lament the fact that my boys' immersion in Spanish won't be as intensive as mine was. I think you and I might need to get together for a cafecito and compare notes--there aren't that many ticas in DC!

Hi Kimberly,

Reading your blog and you bio is uncanny, it's as though about myself. I too live in the DC area; I also have a Costa Rican mother and American father. I spent my childhood living in the U.S and abroad spending high school in Costa Rica. I just had my first child a month ago and it is nice to hear about ways in which other moms are incorporating language and culture as they raise their children. I'm still toying with different ideas on how to immerse my son into Spanish. Luckily my mom lives nearby and I have her and living abroad to thank for my fluency, but I know his exposure won't be as intensive as mine was. I hope to make our first trip with our son to Costa Rica sometime in December and hopefully it will be the first of many. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. Pura Vida!

Kimberly! Are we on the same trip?!

I can identify with practically everything we say. In fact, I'm typing this as my daughter sits in front of the TV watching The Backyardigans in Spanish, waiting for her lunch to be served. I think a gecko is pasted to the wall behind her, too! LOL!
Since we're here for a month I decided for her to attend a local preschool. I'll tell you all about it next week.
We've also made it a priority to visit El Salvador and Mexico every year and spend quality, immersion time. Since I work from home now I can make it happen. I feel blessed by it. Unfortunately, my husband can't be here with us because of work. But, he's OK knowing this is an amazing life experience for his daughter.

So happy for you and your family!
