This is so special! I loved reading this, it reminded me of my tita, or Mama Adela as I call her.

Your tita was a looker! I can see where you get your good looks from!

Elsie,
I can't even describe the emotions I felt reading your post. I wanted to cry, smile and dance all at the same time! It also made me feel I've missed out on something huge in my life. I don't have any memories even remotely as special as the ones you have of your Tita. What a treasure in your life and a legacy for your daughter.

@Jennifer--Your abuelita and her dichos are one-of-a-kind!

What a beautiful post. I can completely relate. I lost my Abuelita in 2008 so I was lucky to have her in my life for 34 wonderful years. I am tearing up even as I write this... She was (and still is, in my mind) the glue that holds our family together. She had amazing stories of her youth, of meeting my Abuelito, of the hardships she experienced in her life - her motto was "No hay nacido nadie para vencerme!" and, in the middle of any crisis to which I would go to her for advice, she would often tell me "Eres mujer o eres rata?" She And if I cried over something, whether it was trivial or significant, she would say, "Llora cuando me muera!" ...and did I ever. She taught me strength of spirit, endurance, loyalty and unity. Every time I smell Shalimar by Guerlain, I think of her. To this day, I make my coffee like she used to - with piloncillo and a stick of cinnamon - and my children love her sopa de estrellitas. How I miss her, but I will pass down her stories to my children - for she once told me that you remain alive until the last person who can tell stories about you has passed. I take that very much to heart. And with tears in my eyes, I have to go back to work :) Again, beautiful, Elsie!
