I’m a bilingual therapist in Phialdelphia, an il face this every day. Here what you could do: Your child needs to have ” the need” to use her Spanish, praise her when she does it, tell her how proud and happy you are about it, look for family members, friends, community people with she can practice too. Web cams and Skipe are good tools to motivate her to talk with: la abuelita, los tios. los primos if they live far away.

I don't really have any fears about raising a bilingual child, but I do have frustrations because I am the only one speaking in Spanish to her at home. I think it can’t be said enough that finding a professional that has experience with bilingual children is really important. It may mean doing a little more legwork, but it makes a world of difference in getting the help your child needs if you have a concern.

My biggest worry is that since Spanish is not my native language, I would cause my children harm in their language development. By reading “The Bilingual Edge,” I learned that I had nothing to fear. I also learned a lot of great ways to increase his exposure to Spanish.

The biggest misconception that I have heard is that my children will be confused by learning three languages, but I know that this is not true.
