HI Kimberly: I am a Costa Rican born father and EFL teacher at the University of Costa Rica. Since I was very young I knew I wanted to have my kids bilingual (Spanish and English). Well almost three years ago, my daughter itzel was born and since she was in momie´s tummy, I started talking to her in English...singing kids songs , etc. and from the moment she was born, I had never talked to her in Spanish. At that time, I hadnt heard about OPOL, however to my surprise, otr instinct as a teacher, I was following the principles of OPOL. I am glad that some contributors are having similar experiences and I am doing a qualititative research on the language development itzel is having.. I will for sure share this with all of you. I am glad I came across this website and hope to learn more about the wonderful expriences all of you are sharing!!! by the way, my wife is also teaching her sign language (LESCO) and it is wonderful how Itzel is acquiring it too.

Kimberly, I love your family story and your determination to pass on the gift of bilingualism to your children. You sound like an awesome mom! I particular loved one of your advice "Never, never underestimate your child" -- that should every mother's tagline in life. I, for sure, firmly believe in that. I look forward to your posts. Congratulations for being selected as a contributor!

I think it's wonderful that you recognize the value of raising your children to be bilingual against all odds. For most parents, a tough diagnosis would be the excuse they need to stop trying to speak another language at home, since it's a difficult thing to maintain even in the best of circumstances. I wish you the best of luck and look forward to reading more of your posts.
