Thanks for your comment, Kalen! You're 100% right! Listening to you speak Spanish to the employees at stores and restaurants, instead of reverting to English, will definitely help create that perceived need - and your girls will benefit hugely from this!
Yo se que es más fácil en inglés, pero recuerda que no solamente es bueno para las niñas, pero también para ti! Qué bueno que el artículo te haya recordado que vale la pena hacer el esfuerzo!

Many of our favorite restaurants are small family-owned Mexican restaurants in our area. We extend our Spanish-only "rule" that we use in the house to places that we know we will encounter other Spanish speakers. We always encourage our son to order his own food and talk to as many people as possible. Great article and tips!

We've also made an effort to take our family to restaurants and stores that represent hispanic culture as well. Lexi calls the Hispanic grocery store near our house, "the pinata store." The thing that I realized when reading the article is that althoug we do try to expose our kids to latin stores, restaurants and church, I have grown lazy in speaking Spanish when we go. When I was single, trying to learn Spanish, I would purposefully speak Spanish to people who I knew spoke it. But now that I have a fluent Spanish speaking husband and know that most employees speak English as well as Spanish, I have grown lazy and usually either just speak English or let my husband order for me. I guess it would help increase the perception of need for my kids to speak the language if I forced myself to speak Spanish too. Thanks for the article!
