That is the right blog for anybody who wants to search out out about this topic. You notice a lot its virtually laborious to argue with you (not that I truly would need匟aHa). You positively put a brand new spin on a topic thats been written about for years. Great stuff, simply nice!

Wow. This was really sad. But I applaud you for taking charge now and making a change. I also agree with Tricia and Pamela. And with Ruby: the challenge is well worth it. Most DVDs have a Spanish language track so we can watch our favorite movies in Spanish.

I found my self in the same boat. I grew up speaking spanish but now it seems my whole family is bringing up their kids speaking english only. It's even more difficult in my household since i am the only spanish speaking person. I am trying to raise my children with 2 cultures and 2 languages. It has been a challenge but well worth it. Thanks for sharing yor tips.

This whole endeavor needs to make sense to your kids, not to you only. Take them to your native country, have them meet people there, create relationships, discover this new world, culture and language. Only then will speaking Spanish make any sense to them. It was only when my mother took me to Chile for the first time when I was ten that these abstract concept of "Chile", "Spanish" became a reality that I could finally grasp and begin to understand. This made me open my mind, heart and willingness to start communicating to the local people and family, in their language, Spanish. It finally made sense.

My one tip: just continue to speak it even if they don't. My home was filled with Spanish-speaking parents, music, tv, and friends. My sisters and I eventually stopped speaking Spanish when we entered school, but my parents didn't and that's how it stuck. They never asked us to or forced us to speak Spanish because they detested the fact that they were asked to when they immigrated from Mexico as teenagers. My parents indirectly taught us how beautiful the language was by living their daily lives immersed in Spanish.

That being said, we understood more than we spoke and through the years I have had to take it upon myself to relearn, refresh, and revive the dormant Spanish words in my mind, as my mother put it.

Good luck! It was definitely an inspiring read.

These are not earth-shattering, but here are two things to add to your great list:
+Switch the language on your video game consoles to Spanish. I know you can do it on the Nintendo DS and Wii, and I would assume you can on other consoles as well. If my kids want to play videogames, they need to do it in Spanish. Not all games come with Spanish language as an option, but some do, and some are pretty text-heavy. My kids are learning all kids of great vocabulary that is totally relevant to their tweener lives.
+Buy fun family games in Spanish. I would recommend Manzanas con Manzanas and Derrota a los Padres, both of which involve a good bit of discussion as part of the game itself. You can get both from Amazon.com. For slightly younger kids, Pictureka comes with cards that have both Spanish and English on them. My youngest got it for Christmas, and soon I'm going to white-out the English words so that we have no choice but to play in Spanish!
