I had to smile as I read the opening paragraphs of this essay... the parallels between Susan's story and my mother's are just too much. =) My mother went to Chile as a college grad on a fullbright scholarship, only to meet my father, fall in love, and get married. Ok, so he was actually from an affluent Chilean family, and she was the young one in that tale (he was 13 years her senior), but still so many shared experiences... especially her family who thought her completely nuts for deciding to stay in that "3rd world, socialist" country. Turns out they got divorced in the end, but only after 20 yrs of marriage and 4 children, and he eventually moved to the US to be close to us after my mom moved us back and to this day is invited to birthday parties and christmas morning at my mom's and step-dad's home so I certain;y don't think their marriage can be considered a "failure."

I can't wait to read part 2 of this essay.
