I just finished an article on learning a second language helps boost children’s brain power, making children stronger, quicker and smarter. The effect is more obvious the earlier that a second language was learned.

So I think there is nothing to worry about learning two languages at the same time. Actually we as parents should encourage our children to learn a second language when they are young.

Reading this article inspires me to reinvigorate my effort with myself to speak spanish to my son daily. I read, write, speak Spnaish. My husband speaks spanish to our 12 yr old son since birth to today our son answers him in English. I also did the same until about 8 or 9 yrs old to my son, unfortunately I have been the one who stopped because English is so much easier to communicate with, I was born in the United States with parents from Mexico. My spanish increased and became wider in breath of vocabulary since I started working in a mainly spanish speaking corporation. Of course also my entire adult family speaks it although the younger generation speaks english, which is why I believe makes english easier and more common place between cousins and friends. I regret not following through with my commitment to speaking spanish only to our son, but it is difficult to restart for the reasons I mentioned. But also because my son says, "English! English! Mom speak to me in English!", he does not want me to speak to him in Spanish. I am stuck now for of having dropped the ball, on speaking Spanish to him. I would like to send him to a Spanish immersion porgram in Mexico, but with all the drug cartel violence happening, makes it difficult for me to send him abroad with those dangers lurking there, even if I were to go with him. I will redouble my efforts starting today, thanks for a great article and inspiration I enjoy Los Ninos en Su Casa, I love how well Alina translates thoughts and ideas that the guests are having trouble translating(getting accross) in order for the true Spanish only speaking public to understand it's the best I've seen.
